Engraved Brass Plaques

Engraved Brass Plaque

Engraved brass plaques are the classical 'Opening Ceremony' or 'Commemorative' plaque. They have been around for as long as brass itself. Charles Wilson was making these type of plaques when he started his engraving career in Durham in 1899 and although today we can make them a lot quicker and easier with the aid of computers, the end result is very similar to the ones he made over 100 years ago. They are engraved from brass plate then the lettering is filled with a paint (usually black). The plaque is then linished (or sanded) so that there is a fine grain running horizontally. The final process is to apply a clear lacquer to help protect the plaque from finger marks.

All brass plaques will tarnish in time. Black speckles will appear and with further aging the plaque will have what is commonly termed a 'Patina' finish. The 'Patina' finish is what gives the plaques their unique character and although they can be refurbished and brought back to 'as new' by sanding and repainting, most people choose to let them age in their own natural way.
